Why You Shouldn’t Be Afraid of Microneedling

October 1, 2020

Last week on the blog we covered the ins and outs of a skin care treatment known as dermaplaning (check it out if you missed it!). This week we wanted to delve into another extremely beneficial-yet-sometimes-intimidating service: microneedling. Specifically: Does microneedling hurt/is microneedling painful?

First, Some Microneedling Basics:

Microneedling creates tiny “micro-injuries” to the skin using an extremely precise, FDA-cleared microneedling device. This, in turn, stimulates collagen and elastin in the treatment areas (aka, the stuff that keeps our skin plump, elastic, and youthful). This form of collagen induction therapy treats fine lines and wrinkles, reduces acne scarring, and improves overall skin tone and skin texture.

Many notice an initial “glow” 1-2  weeks after their first microneedling treatment. You will continue to see more dramatic effects after several treatments spaced out over a few months. Clients who try microneedling often become devotees of the procedures, and it’s a staff favorite.

Note the effects on client’s nasolabial folds and smile lines.

That being said, it definitely makes sense that some clients have reservations about this one (“needles” + “face” doesn’t sound particularly pleasant!). However, the reality is microneedling is a minimally-invasive procedure that takes about 30 minutes and requires little-to-no downtime. Now…

Does Microneedling Hurt/Is Microneedling Painful?

No! Microneedling is not painful! This is because our provider applies a topical numbing gel or numbing cream to the skin about 20 minutes prior to your microneedling procedure. You will feel virtually nothing and will be able to sit and talk comfortable during your session. The only tangible sensation you will register is the “buzzing” of the microneedling device.

Will Microneedling Scar My Skin?

Microneedling will absolutely not cause scarring when booked with a well-trained and experienced provider. In fact, microneedling is used to treat scars and uneven skin texture. A skilled provider will adjust the depth of the needles to your skin’s specific needs as well as to each area of the face.

Will I Breakout After Microneedling?/Will My Skin Purge After Microneedling?

Some clients do experience mild purging after their appointment. However, this resolves within about a week and is not cause for concern.

Is There A Risk Of Infection?

As with any treatment that entails openings in the skin, there is a very minor risk of infection. This is why choosing a reputable provider with a well-trained staff is critical to a positive microneedling experience. A clean, professional med spa/doctor’s office will ensure that all proper sterilization protocols are in place.

It is also important to follow the proper post-care protocols to avoid risk of infection after treatment. This includes washing your hands before touching you face, as well as keeping bacteria at bay for the first 24 hours after treatment. (For example, sterilize you cell phone with alcohol or use speaker phone. Always use a fresh face mask, etc.)

What Should I Expect After My Microneedling Appointment?

While microneedling does not hurt, expect to be red for several hours after treatment. You may also experience minor “pinpoint bleeding,” depending on the depth of treatment. This should not last for more than a few minutes and you can rinse it away with warm water that evening.

Over the next several days you will experience dryness, peeling, and flaking. This will ultimately reveal new, rejuvenated skin as your body also produces new collagen. You should cease the use of all active ingredients like retinoids or chemical exfoliants for seven days post-treatment. (You should also stop using actives for at least three days prior to your microneedling appointment as well).

Are There Side Effects?

In all honesty, the only microneedling side effects are short-term redness and the flaking skin in the week after treatment, However, this is to be expected and also is what ultimately yields results. The procedure can also cause some mild swelling the day-of treatment, but it generally subsides within 24 hours.

The Bottom Line

Microneedling is in nowhere near as intimidating as it sounds. It is also a fantastic tool for improving skin texture, reducing scars, fine lines and wrinkles, and keeping your skin looking plump.

Still not sure? Feel free to contact us to schedule either a virtual or in-person consultation. The consulation entails a full skin analysis and your expert provider can assess if you are a good candidate for microneedling at that time.
